We are excited to announce that  Lumber wins a Hip Award. Interior Design’s HiP Award honors industry people and innovative products. This unique initiative honors commercial industry pioneers and achievements in product design.

At last, somebody has put an end to awkward lingering. Lumber lets people hang, lean, linger and loiter without the unnecessary physical strain of sitting down only to get back up again. Developed for places where traditional seating or chairs are redundant or too spacious, Lumber is a playful rest area ready to be taken on by both Suits and school children.

Lumber stems from the idea of the mobile office, a stop on the way, and as the name suggests, a soft beam for a quick rest. Designed by Addi, Lumber appears to be in movement, much as its user on their way to or from a meeting, waiting for an appointment or perhaps food pick-up. With no obvious back or front, Lumber can be placed in most spaces and even hung on a wall for maximum expression yet minimal space. A little side table enables a quick meeting over a coffee or a touchdown with the laptop. The beam is upholstered with flame proof wool in a cover fully removable, reparable, and exchangeable. Its legs are made from powder coated metal, everything produced and assembles in Sweden and chipped in flat pack.

How does the project showcase innovation?

Design studio Addi has wrestled the question how minimal a piece can be, both in regards of expression as well as material use, and still hold a lot of character. With inspiration from the traditional sawhorse, Addi has created a playful yet functional piece of furniture that fulfills new needs in a time where we more and more find ourselves waiting around in anonymous spaces.

How is the design beneficial?

Lumber is inviting and its message is clear; lean on me without any strings attached. Although its main object is to relieve people for a short period of time, it can also act as a room divider when placed next to each other, a centerpiece in an artsy environment as well as a play area for young and old.
